Oort
Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 23, 2026
Oort is a native music player for Mac, iPad, and iPhone, developed by Octet Software ("we", "us", or "our"). Oort is built to be private by design: your music library and accounts stay on your device and in your own cloud storage.
1. Information Oort does not collect
- We do not operate user accounts and do not collect your name or email.
- We do not track what you listen to, when, or how often.
- We do not run third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.
- We never receive a copy of your music files or your cloud-storage credentials.
2. Cloud storage connections
Oort can connect to cloud storage providers such as Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive so you can play music you keep there. When you connect a provider:
- Authentication happens directly between you and that provider using their official sign-in (OAuth). We never see your password.
- The resulting access token is stored securely on your device in the system Keychain. It is not transmitted to us.
- Oort uses that token only to list folders and stream or download the music files you choose. You can disconnect a provider at any time, which removes the stored token from your device.
3. Music metadata enrichment
To display album artwork and correct track details, Oort may look up metadata from third-party music databases. When it does, it sends only the minimum information needed for the lookup (such as an artist, album, or track name). These requests do not include your identity, and the results are stored locally on your device.
4. Purchases
Oort is sold through the Apple App Store. Any purchase or unlock is processed by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. We receive aggregate, anonymized sales information from Apple but not your payment details.
5. Data stored on your device
Oort stores your library index, metadata, cached artwork, settings, and cloud tokens locally on your device. This information stays under your control and is removed if you delete the app (tokens stored in the Keychain can also be removed by disconnecting a provider inside the app).
6. Children's privacy
Oort does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
7. Third-party services
When you connect them, your use of Dropbox, OneDrive, and any metadata provider is governed by their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review them.
8. Changes to this policy
If our data practices ever change, we will update this policy and revise the "Last updated" date above.
